Health Centers Face Challenges Brought By Hurricane Ike
Friday, September 19, 2008
Community Health Centers across the state are helping with recovery and rebuilding in their own communities, and reaching out to evacuees from other areas.
Every CHC in Houston and East Texas is scrambling to open as soon as possible after hurricane Ike knocked down utility lines and interrupted water and wastewater services. We are very proud to say that most of our Centers are open and operating extra hours to help patients keep their health care needs met.
At this time, the centers in Port Arthur, Beaumont, Newton, Silsbee, and Orange remain closed.
Centers in Houston are opening as soon as electricity comes on at their individual sites.
South Central Houston CHC remains closed, due to lack of utilities.
Houston Community Health Center is without electricity, but will be opening a mobile unit in the next couple of days.
The Health Center on Galveston Island remains closed, due to lack of utilities.
The devastation of Ike has yet to be quantified. Displaced families are still in shelters around the state. We are proud to say that CHCs are participating in shelter care for evacuees in Commerce, Nacogdoches, San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, and wherever else they are needed.
Evacuees are eligible for services at any regular CHC site, as well. Many families are finding their way to the waiting rooms of our Health Centers. We are here to help.
